    Be a Change Agent

We know that a truly inclusive culture starts at the top. But it doesn’t end there. To turn a chief executive’s mandate for a more diverse and inclusive culture into action, senior corporate leaders must deploy the best change management tactics.

The culture change imperative is not limited to corporate diversity and inclusion leaders.  Their counterparts in government, the military, academia, and other departments in high-profile global companies, can teach us how to become effective change agents.

What tools, tactics and personal attributes are most effective for creating an inclusive culture — one that embraces disability as a diversity segment alongside all others?

The 2019 NOD Annual Corporate Leadership Council Forum will explore how executives in all these sectors — business, government, the military and academia — have created meaningful change; deepened leadership support for diversity, equity and inclusion; established disability as a diversity segment; and been successful at leading culture change.

    What to Expect:

    • Dynamic changemakers from government, the military, academia and major companies, will describe how they successfully led and managed organizational culture change, especially in diversity, equity and inclusion.
    • Leading experts from allied fields of adaptive leadership, change management, reflective practice, and social “intrapreneurship” will discuss the challenges of translating a culture change mandate from the top to every employee on staff.
    • We’ll discuss how these lessons can be applied to practices within your organization in order to cultivate a more disability-inclusive workforce.

In addition to valuable networking opportunities with speakers and disability leaders, participants will leave with a sense of their own leadership model, and with tools to turn ideas into action.

      • 11:00 AM – Plenary Session II | Leading from the Middle: In Conversation with Ellen Schall
        • A pioneer in the field of “reflective practice,” Ellen Schall’s approach to organizational change was first shaped by her experiences in the 1980s as commissioner of New York City’s Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Schall believes that organizational transformation requires “meaning-making” leaders who can use inquiry, reflection and observation to create “reflective organizations.”
        • Schall took over an agency in disarray and was responsible for its Spofford juvenile detention center in the South Bronx, notorious for its violence and dilapidated conditions. She’ll talk about her decision to close the facility and how she addressed the internal tensions and operational problems in every division, along with deep-seated class and racial tensions among employees.
        • Schall will be joined by Carol Glazer, President of the National Organization on Disability, whose career has been devoted to helping mission-driven organizations achieve mission and financial success. Schall and Glazer will discuss dilemmas leaders faced when trying to affect change, and how they navigated challenges by building reflective organizations.
          • Ellen Schall, Senior Presidential Fellow, Martin Cherkasky Professor of Health Policy & Management at Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University; Carol Glazer, President, National Organization on Disability

        • Karen Brown, Executive Consultant, Bridge Arrow
      • 11:50 AM – Plenary Session III | Crossroads of Compliance, Disclosure and Trust
        • To disclose or not to disclose? For most employees with a disability, trust and fear of rejection shape the answer to this question and affect engagement and productivity. Personal stories will illuminate how leaders have overcome barriers to success. Hear from compliance experts Craig Leen and Candee Chambers on how to navigate workplace obstacles to disability inclusion. They’ll discuss regulatory changes in section 503 compliance that are good for business and employees.
        • Leen is Director of the Labor Department’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs and will share essential details that affect diversity hiring. Chambers is Executive Director of DirectEmployers Association and a passionate advocate for HR practitioners working to meet federal compliance regulations.
          • Craig E. Leen, Director, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), U.S. Department of Labor; Candee Chambers, Executive Director, DirectEmployers Association; Karen Brown, Executive Consultant, Bridge Arrow
      • 12:55 PM | Keynote Address: How Do You Overcome Friction?
        • The best leaders work from the inside out, with support from the top. They skillfully chart a course for others who must follow. They navigate internal constituencies, while knowing how to “sell” change that will resonate with all who need to buy in. They have the requisite “soft skills”, humility and an instinctive desire to inspire, to open themselves to others and lead by example. Learn how you can elevate your impact with individuals, teams, and throughout your organization.
        • Admiral John M. Richardson, the Chief of Naval Operations, led the Navy’s successful diversity and inclusion initiative. He will speak about leadership that influences others to act and achieve results. From his passionate approach to leadership, you’ll gain an understanding of how to harness your own, unique influence.
In this session, the Admiral will converse with Luke Visconti, Chairman and Founder of DiversityInc, and one of the country’s most successful social entrepreneurs. He’ll share change management insights from his many discussions with CEOs about their leadership decisions and approach to diversity.

Copeland will share how he’s translated a mandate from the CEO to his colleagues to ensure that the company’s workforce practices are consistent with its business.
